The Kakuma Art Society was founded on 27th February 2009 in order to promote artistic development and support for the arts in Kakuma Camp.
The Kakuma Art Society was founded on 27th February, 2009 by seven founding members of diverse international backgrounds. Sally Lincoln, an American artist who visited Kakuma for six weeks in the beginning of this year, played a key role in its establishment.
According to their information sheet, the purpose of the Art Society is “to provide an organization for promoting the artistic development of individuals residing in Kakuma Refugee Camp, by encouraging participation and obtaining materials.” It also aims to “promote awareness of the value of art to the community.”
Meetings of the Kakuma Art Society are held in Zone Four of Kakuma Camp every weekday from 9am-noon, while meetings are held in Zone Five from 3-5:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.
There are only two rules for membership in the Kakuma Art Society. The first is that you must bring your own pencil. The second is that you may not be discouraged.
