The residents of Kakuma have been worried about the Covid-19 pandemic, which has affected many countries but has yet to reach the camp. On 13th March 2020, Kenya announced its first case of Corona Virus, and fear rose in the camp when it was reported in The Daily Nation on March 20th that four people had been detained while attempting to enter Kakuma by road. Due to concerns that they might have been infected by coronavirus, they were put into isolation. The three Somali-Americans men were all relatives; the eldest had just returned from the US, and he was accompanied on the road by his son and grandson.

A large fire broke out at the Jesuit Refugee Service’s (JRS) safe haven at around 5:30pm in the evening of January 2,2020. The fire caused severe damage to the building, located at Kakuma 1, Zone 1, Block 8.

LGBTI+ Refugees fight for a place in UNHCR database

On November 29, 2019 a group of LGBTI+ refugees camped in front of the UNHCR staff compound in Kakuma. It was an extension of a November 6th protest that was led by new LBGTI+ arrivals, who have been residing in the reception center for several months. Following three days of demonstrations in front of the UNHCR offices, the group was dispersed by the police as they tried to enter the UNHCR compound by force as they try to push through the gate confronting with the security guards.

Decreases in the number of resettlement places available and a cut in food rations have led to growing levels of suicide, drug abuse and alcoholism as a coping mechanism among female refugees in Kakuma refugee camp, northwest Kenya, a home for more than 88,000 women from different East and central African countries, who’ve escaped war or civil strife.

Refugees in Kakuma and Kalobeyei will soon have access to a new smartphone application designed to increase access to critical information despite high data costs and poor network coverage. RELAY is a community app developed by REFUNITE, an NGO that is best known for its use of phone technologies to reunite families separated through forced displacement.

Water Shortage in Kakuma Camp

The Kakuma refugee camp has been hit by a shortage of water since January, forcing camp residents to wake in the middle of the night to queue with their jerricansat community water taps for morning collection. Gang Rape Reported in Kalobeyei Settlement

A South Sudanese woman was allegedly raped in her house in Kalobeyei settlement on the night of February 3rd, 2019 at 1:00am when two unknown attackers armed with crude weapons entered the house. They had followed the woman as she returned from her relatives’ house, where she had been visiting and watching television.
