Over the past seven months, cases of sexual and gender-based violence have increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the measures put in place to curb the spread of the virus, the operation of schools, sports events, businesses and most social activities has been affected. This situation forces interaction that used to be limited as many people are forced to stay at home almost every day.

One dead, another seriously wounded in robbery gone wrong

On the night of August 25, 2020, unidentified armed men confronted a young refugee outside his residence on block four in zone one of Kakuma camp one. The confrontation, which occurred around 3:30 in the morning, ended in a shooting which resulted in one death and one serious injury.

Refugee family ask for justice in killing of son by police during curfew

A refugee from South Sudan died on April 26th while receiving treatment at IRC hospital in Kakuma 4. The deceased identified as Sunday Peter was a 22-year old resident of Kakuma 4, Block 1 Zone 2 and a Form One student at Vision Secondary school.

An asylum seeker was found dead at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church compound in Kakuma refugee camp one on Saturday, February 9 2020 in an apparent suicide.

The man was an Ethiopian national in his 40s named Endalkachew Seifu, who had fled his country in the year 2013, as reported by his close friend.

LGBTI+ Refugees fight for a place in UNHCR database

On November 29, 2019 a group of LGBTI+ refugees camped in front of the UNHCR staff compound in Kakuma. It was an extension of a November 6th protest that was led by new LBGTI+ arrivals, who have been residing in the reception center for several months. Following three days of demonstrations in front of the UNHCR offices, the group was dispersed by the police as they tried to enter the UNHCR compound by force as they try to push through the gate confronting with the security guards.

Female refugees turn to Suicide and drug to escape agonizing camp life

Decreases in the number of resettlement places available and a cut in food rations have led to growing levels of suicide, drug abuse and alcoholism as a coping mechanism among female refugees in Kakuma refugee camp, northwest Kenya, a home for more than 88,000 women from different East and central African countries, who’ve escaped war or civil strife.

MOTORBIKE DRIVER ROBBED AND KILLED

A motorbike driver was killed on January 14th 2019, along the paths that connect Kalobeyei Settlement and Kakuma four area. The deceased was identified as Adelin Nkeshimana, a Burundian national and a refugee registered under UNHCR protection. He had been living in Kakuma refugee camp – in Kakuma 3, Zone 1, Block 6 since 2016 when he arrived in Kakuma after escaping violence in his home country.
